Calypsos For Cruisers originated after Smitty entered a
calypso competition in 2001 put on by Boaters’ Enterprise Ltd. at the Crews
Inn complex at Chaguaramas in Trinidad. He won the competition with his
selection Call Jesse and it became a big hit among the
cruising community. Following the competition, many cruisers came to
him with ideas for other calypsos and It’s
Your Fault and
Life On The Hard were created. In 2002,
Boaters’ Enterprise Ltd. requested him to perform at their annual Taste Of
Carnival presentation. There he sang Life On The Hard and the now
popular Call Jesse. It was at this performance that the title The
Mighty Yachtie was bestowed on him. In 2003, he was again requested to
perform at the Taste Of Carnival presentation and he sang BOAT, Don’t Come A
Knocking and Call Jesse. An
article, written by fellow cruisers Rod
& Jan Tuttle, appeared in The BOCA, a monthly Magazine published by
Boaters' Enterprise Ltd. in Trinidad in March 2002. Jack Dausend,
editor of The BOCA Magazine, did a CD review in
May 2004.
